he Golden Rooster Awards (traditional Chinese: 金雞獎; simplified Chinese: 金鸡奖; pinyin: Jīn Jī Jiăng) are the most prestigious awards in film given in mainland China. The awards are given annually, beginning in 1981. The name of the award came from the year of the Rooster in 1981. Award recipients receive a statuette in the shape of a golden rooster, and are selected by a jury of film makers, film experts, and film historians. The awards are given out by the China Film Association.

Originally, Golden Roosters were only available to mainland Chinese nominees, but in 2005, the awards opened up the acting categories to actors from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and elsewhere in an effort to compete with Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards.[1]

The entire event is actually composed of a film festival and an awards ceremony. Originally the film festival consisted of two distinct events, the Golden Rooster festival, and a separate festival for the Hundred Flowers Awards. The two festivals were combined into a single national festival in 1992.[2]

The Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Awards take place on alternate years since 2004, with the Golden Rooster taking place on odd years. Films in the past two years are eligible for the Golden Rooster awards since 2005.

The Huabiao Awards is an annual awards ceremony for Chinese cinema. Named after the decorative Chinese winged columns (huabiaos), The Huabiao Awards were first instituted in 1957 as the Ministry of Culture Excellence Film awards. Between 1958 and 1979, no awards were given. In 1994, the awards were renamed "Huabiao." The ceremony is held in Beijing.

Unlike other award ceremonies, Huabiao Awards for individual categories are often given to multiple nominees.

The People's Hundred Flowers Awards (traditional Chinese: 大眾百花獎; simplified Chinese: 大众百花奖; pinyin: Dàzhòng Băihuā Jiăng) are considered, together with the Golden Rooster Awards, the most prestigious film awards in China. The awards were set up by China Film Association in 1962 and sponsored by People's Film (大众电影, sometimes also translated as Popular Cinema) magazine, which has the greatest circulation in China. The awards were formerly voted annually by the readers of People's Film.[1] Recent polls however allow voters to cast ballots through SMS, via the Internet or by dialling a special number, and are no longer exclusive to readers of People's Film. [2]

The 2nd Hundred Flowers Awards poll was held in 1963, but was not conducted again until 1980, owing to the Cultural Revolution. Thereafter, it became an annual event until 2004. Since then, the Hundred Flowers Awards ceremonies are held biennially, on alternate years with the Golden Rooster.

Originally the Golden Rooster festival and a separate festival for the Hundred Flowers Awards were two distinct events. The two festivals were combined into a single national festival in 1992.[1]

From 1980 to 2003, the yearly Hundred Flowers poll selects the three films with the highest tallied votes as the Best Pictures of the year. Since 2004, Chinese-language films from Taiwan and Hong Kong are also eligible for the awards. Note also that since 2004, films in the past two years are eligible, making the competition much stiffer than before. The film with the highest votes is chosen as best picture, with two runners-up.

John Woo, Chen Kaige and Zhang Ziyi were among those receiving the gongs at China’s top domestic kudosfest, the state-sponsored Huabiao Awards, which featured a host of stars from the Chinese diaspora.

The hand of the Communist government is much in evidence at these biennial awards, particularly in the way so many awards are shared.

Traditionally they are mainly for honoring propaganda films, but with the rise of the film biz in China to heady new heights, there has been more of a commercial focus, plus a lot more thesps and helmers from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Action stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li also took part this year.

The awards are sponsored by the industry regulator, SARFT (State Administration of Broadcast, Film and Television) and began life as the Ministry of Culture’s Excellent Film Awards in 1957.

Chen Kaige, best known in the West for “Farewell, My Concubine,” won the outstanding director award for “Forever Enthralled,” a biopic of the Peking Opera star Mei Lanfang. He shared with local favourite Feng Xiaogang, who won for his Chinese civil war movie “Assembly.”

There has been a lot of speculation that Chen Kaige has become a U.S.

citizen, earning him the ire of China’s online community who deem such a decision as unpatriotic.

However, Chen made a rousing declaration of national allegiance.

“I don't plan to become a foreign citizen and I have never done so. I will work hard to spread Chinese culture as a Chinese national. This is called not forgetting your identity,” he said.

Actioner supremo John Woo, recently returned from Hollywood, was given the prize of best ethnic Chinese director from outside mainland China for his two-part Chinese-language blockbuster “Red Cliff”.

Zhang Ziyi shared the best actress award with Fan Zhibo for her performance as Mei's love interest in “Forever Enthralled.” Fan won for the drama “Emergency.”

Zhang Hanyu won the best thesp award for “Assembly,” which he shared with Guo Jinglin for “Yuan Longping,” a biopic about the agricultural scientist who developed hybrid rice.

The best ethnic Chinese actor from outside mainland China was Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen for his role as Bruce Lee's kung fu master in “Ip Man,” while Shu Qi from Taiwan won the actress award in this category for “If You Are The One.”

Taking their name from the decorative columns outside the Forbidden City in the heart of Beijing, the Huabiao awards are one of a series of high-profile, state-sponsored awards.

HONG KONG � "Farewell My Concubine" director Chen Kaige, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" star Zhang Ziyi and director John Woo were among the filmmakers honored at China's government-organized Huabiao film awards in Beijing.

Veteran action stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li and actor Chow Yun-fat also walked the red carpet at the biennial awards ceremony held by China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television late Saturday.

This year's ceremony was especially star-studded because the booming mainland market is becoming increasingly lucrative to actors and directors from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The awards have a reputation for honoring propaganda films but have incorporated commercial cinema.

Chen was named outstanding director along with Feng Xiaogang. Chen was honored for his biopic of late Peking Opera star Mei Lanfang, "Forever Enthralled." Feng won for his war movie "Assembly," which revolves around the heroics of a People's Liberation Army unit during the Chinese civil war in the 1940s.

Chen struck a patriotic note in his acceptance speech, shooting down recent speculation that he had become an American citizen.

"I don't plan to become a foreign citizen and I have never done so. I will work hard to spread Chinese culture as a Chinese national. This is called not forgetting your identity," Chen said.

Zhang shared best actress honors with Fan Zhibo for her performance as Mei's love interest in "Forever Enthralled." Fan won for the drama "Emergency."

Zhang Hanyu won best actor for "Assembly." He shared best acting honors with Guo Jinglin, who starred in a biopic of rice scientist Yuan Longping.

Woo received the prize for best ethnic Chinese director from outside mainland China. The Hong Kong native, known for his stylish action thrillers, recently returned from Hollywood to make the $80 million, two-part Chinese-language historical epic "Red Cliff," which was a massive hit in China, earning 600 million Chinese yuan ($88 million).

Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen was named best ethnic Chinese actor outside mainland China for playing Bruce Lee's kung fu master Ip Man. Taiwan's Shu Qi won best actress outside the mainland for her role in Feng's romantic comedy "If You Are the One."

Not only will Jackie host the HuaBiao awards on Saturday night but he and Jet Li will be presenting one of the awards together.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on CCTV from 7 pm onwards on Saturday evening.
